On Monday, November 2, 2015, Hunton & Williams LLP’s Centre for Information Policy Leadership (“CIPL”) Senior Policy Advisor, Fred H. Cate, moderated an academic panel on The Data Dilemma: A Transatlantic Discussion on Privacy, Security, Innovation, Trade, and the Protection of Personal Data in the 21st Century. The event was sponsored by Indiana University and took place at the CIEE Global Institute in Berlin, Germany.

The program featured Commissioner Julie Brill from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Dr. Alexander Dix, Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, in an informal dialogue addressing a wide range of pressing transatlantic data protection issues in light of the Court of Justice of the European Union’s Safe Harbor Decision, including the view of the Schleswig-Holstein Commissioner that the EU-U.S. data transfers facilitated by the use of model clauses fail to comply with EU law, EU-U.S. efforts to develop common ground and appropriate oversight of government surveillance, and the outcome of the 37th International Privacy Conference in Amsterdam.
